Nicholas Hutcheson

“His recent paintings find influence in the Australian outback – dissected remains of animal and trees shedding their bark. “Preserved in aridity, the desiccated forms of kangaroos, lizards and trees come to resemble the geography and geology of the land itself: layers of strata contoured by the millennia. Nicholas’ accomplished mark-making and deft use of colour produces arresting and unsettling works of complexity and originality,” observes Brisbane art dealer Andrew Baker, who presented Nicholas’ first Australian solo exhibition last year.”

  1. His work is fascinating - I am very happy that you found him Christie. Look up the work PALIMPSEST in relation to art - I think you will agree, his work has this quality and it may help you to frame what you say about him in the essay.
Always examine an artist's media and techniques then the visual language they use - it will help you to understand how media and the artist's processes contribute to meaning. Of course, colour, tone, texture are all part of it too - try to identify these elements and how they are used to create the 'look' of his works.
